Medical training

Mr Alex Day qualified as a doctor from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London with a double Distinction and 1st Class BSc (Hons).

His ophthalmology training was initially in south London before moving to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2007 where he undertook 10 years’ higher surgical training. During his higher surgical training at Moorfields, he worked as a Specialist Registrar whilst completing a PhD at University College London and later became an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer.

Mr Alex Day undertook fellowships in cornea, refractive and cataract surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He worked as a refractive surgery fellow to Mr Julian Stevens, and later at the London Vision Clinic under Professor Dan Reinstein during which he completed the Ulster University Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (PGDip CRS, Distinction, 2018). Alex continued to work at the London Vision Clinic as a consultant surgeon specialising in LASIK, SMILE and PRK before returning to work full time at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he works as a NHS Consultant specialising in cataract and laser surgery.

  • Mr Alex Day is an invited examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists CertLRS examination.

  • Mr Alex Day is internationally acknowledged as a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in cataract and refractive surgery.

  • He is a member of many professional organisations including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), the UK & Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS) and the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS).

  • Mr Alex Day was appointed as an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London, 2020.

  • Alex Day is internationally recognised for his research in cataract surgery and laser vision correction. He was ranked no.2 globally by The Ophthalmologist as a Rising Star in 2017.

  • Alex is an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London.

  • He has published 70 papers in peer reviewed medical journals and is first author for 39.

  • He was responsible for the concept and formation of the group behind the Femtosecond laser Assisted Cataract Trial (FACT). This was a £1.5 million NIHR funded multicentre randomised controlled trial of femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) vs conventional phacoemulsification cataract surgery (standard ultrasound cataract surgery).

  • Alex is the Principle Investigator at Moorfields for the £1.1 million NIHR DemDx A&E Artificial Intelligence Triage Platform study.

After Hours

In his spare time, Alex enjoys running, weight lifting, travel and listening to classical music. His private practice supports The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. He is also a Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Skinners’ and The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.

Alex is also a school governor at The Judd School, Tonbridge where he attended before medical school.

Mr Alex Day lives within 30 minutes of both of his clinics so he can easily see any patient with an emergency in person.
