Scared of the Word Surgery? What Really Happens on the Day of Laser Eye Surgery, Step by Step

The thought of having an operation on your eyes is, quite naturally, a daunting one. Over the years, I have met countless patients who delayed getting their vision corrected simply because the word “surgery” sounded too intimidating. If you are feeling nervous about the prospect of laser eye surgery, you are certainly not alone.

But here is the truth: the procedure itself looks and feels very different to a traditional operation. There are no hospital gowns, no general anaesthetics and no prolonged recovery times.

Because I have been through laser eye surgery myself, I know that fear almost always stems from the unknown. Once you understand the process, the anxiety usually disappears. So, let’s remove that uncertainty right now. Here is exactly what happens on the day of your treatment, step by step, so you know precisely what to expect.

Before You Arrive for Laser Eye Surgery: Preparing for the Day

Laser eye surgery does not require fasting, needles or a general anaesthetic. You can eat your breakfast and lunch as normal, and take your usual medications if you have any.

Please also do not wear any makeup for 48 hours before your laser eye surgery. This includes all types of makeup such as powder, blushers or foundation and especially mascara, eye shadow and eyeliner. This is because the particles from makeup are an infection risk. Also, please don’t wear any perfume or aftershave on the day as this can affect the laser beam.

Comfortable clothing is highly recommended. Many people choose to bring a companion with them, although you are fully able to walk independently before and after your treatment.

Most anxiety peaks the night before or during the journey to the clinic. Once you arrive and the process begins, patients consistently tell me they feel far calmer than they expected.

Step One: Arrival and Final Checks

When you arrive, you will be welcomed by my team and myself. We will take you through some final checks, and importantly, these are never rushed. We will examine your eyes one last time and review the specific treatment plan we have already discussed. We will provide you with the clear aftercare instructions, including exactly how and when to use your take-home eye drops.

You are encouraged to ask any last-minute questions and nothing happens until you feel completely comfortable to proceed.

Step Two: Anaesthetic Eye Drops

As I mentioned, there are no injections. Instead, we use numbing eye drops applied to the surface of the eye.

These drops work incredibly quickly. Within seconds, the surface of your eye becomes completely numb and the drops last for over 30 minutes. While you will still be able to feel gentle pressure and movement during the procedure, there is absolutely no pain. Most patients are very pleasantly surprised by how easy this feels. We will also reapply the drops as needed to ensure you remain comfortable throughout.

Step Three: Entering the Treatment Room

The laser suite is a quiet and controlled environment. You will be positioned comfortably on the treatment bed, and I will guide you through what is happening step by step.

A gentle eyelid support is used to gently keep your eyelids open. This often sounds unsettling to patients beforehand, and although it feels a little strange for the first few seconds, after about 20 seconds you don’t even notice it is there.  Your only job is to look at a flashing green fixation light. I will talk to you, so you are never left wondering what is happening.

Step Four: The Laser Treatment Itself

This is the part most people fear, yet it is the part that is usually over the fastest. Our clinic operates using state-of-the-art technology and strictly adheres to the rigorous safety standards, ensuring your treatment is as safe and controlled as possible.

Depending on your specific treatment plan, the laser typically works for just a matter of seconds per eye. Depending on the laser it is either entirely silent or you will hear a buzzing sound . Again, depending on the laser, you may feel mild pressure, but absolutely no pain.

The laser follows a highly sophisticated, pre-programmed treatment plan tailored precisely to your exact eye measurements.

Step Five: Immediate Aftercare

Once the laser treatment is finished, we apply protective drops and check your eyes. We will help you into a seated position and give you time to settle.

At this stage, many patients describe their vision as looking misty, like being in a room filled with steam, for some, even this is an immediate improvement in clarity. Your vision will continue to improve over the following hours and days.

Going Home the Same Day

Laser eye treatment is a day procedure, meaning you do not stay overnight. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home, but you will be able to walk out of the clinic yourself.

All patients are advised to go home and rest with their eyes closed for a few hours Some irritation and light sensitivity are common on the first day but usually settles quickly. All patients are given my personal mobile number in case of any urgent queries.

Why Your Follow-Up Matters

The actual time spent under the laser is remarkably short, but your journey to clear vision doesn’t end when you walk out the door. Feeling supported during your recovery is just as important as the procedure itself.

Because I believe in true continuity of care, I handle your follow-up appointments personally. Rather than passing your post-operative checks over to an optometrist (which is standard practice in many high-volume commercial chains), I assess your healing myself. When you return to the clinic, you will sit down with the exact same surgeon who planned and performed your treatment, giving you complete peace of mind – me.

If the fear of the unknown has been keeping you in glasses or contact lenses, I hope walking through these steps has shown you just how calm and controlled modern laser eye treatment really is. When you feel ready, I invite you to book a consultation with me and my team to explore the best options for your vision.

FAQs: Laser Eye Treatment Day

Does laser eye treatment require fasting, needles or a general anaesthetic?

No. The treatment does not require fasting, needles or a general anaesthetic. You can eat normally and take any regular medications.

Is the procedure painful?

No. We apply numbing eye drops to the surface of the eyes, which work quickly and effectively. You can still feel gentle pressure and movement, but there is no pain.

Do I need to be put to sleep for the treatment?

No. Patients remain fully awake, comfortable and supported throughout the brief procedure.

What happens if I blink during the laser treatment?

A small, gentle eyelid support is used to keep your eyelids open, so you blink as normal during the procedure. All you have to do is simply look at a green fixation light and try to relax.
